Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

An abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tighten weakened or separated abdominal muscles.

Who Are Ideal Candidates?

Abdominoplasty is suitable for patients who:

  • Have loose or sagging abdominal skin after pregnancy or major weight loss

  • Experience muscle separation (rectus diastasis)

  • Suffer from skin irritation or infections beneath abdominal folds

  • Maintain a stable weight and are in good overall health

  • Have realistic expectations about surgical outcomes

While it enhances body contour, abdominoplasty is not a substitute for diet or exercise.

Surgical Process

Performed under general anaesthetic at Lakeview Private Hospital, Norwest, the procedure typically takes 3–4 hours. Key steps include:

  • Incision: Low horizontal cut above the pubic area; a second incision may be made around the navel

  • Muscle Repair: Tightening of abdominal muscles to strengthen the core and correct separation

  • Skin & Fat Removal: Excess tissue is excised for a flatter abdominal contour

  • Skin Repositioning: Remaining skin is pulled down, and the incision is closed with sutures

Patients usually stay 1–3 nights in hospital and wear a supportive compression garment. Light activities can resume in 2–3 weeks, with full recovery in 6–8 weeks.

Medicare and Private Health Fund Rebates

In some medically indicated cases, abdominoplasty may qualify for a Medicare rebate (MBS item 30177), such as when excess skin causes:

  • Recurrent skin irritation, infections, or rashes

  • Difficulty with hygiene or movement

Eligible patients with private hospital cover may also receive contributions toward:

  • Hospital and theatre fees

  • Anaesthetist fees

  • A portion of the surgeon’s fees

For cosmetic-only procedures, rebates do not apply.

A GP referral is required to claim Medicare or health fund rebates, ensuring Dr Boccola has your relevant medical history and eligibility is assessed. Cosmetic patients may have a referral voluntarily for coordinated care.

Costs and Out-of-Pocket Fees

Every abdominoplasty is tailored to the individual, so costs vary based on surgical needs, hospital stay, and rebate eligibility. Before surgery, patients receive a detailed written quote covering:

  • Surgeon fees (Dr Boccola)

  • Anaesthetist fees

  • Hospital and theatre costs

  • Applicable Medicare or private health fund rebates

Medicare-eligible procedures can significantly reduce out-of-pocket costs for those with appropriate private cover.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does recovery take?

Most patients return to light duties after 2–3 weeks and resume full exercise by 6–8 weeks post-surgery.

Yes. The incision is placed low across the abdomen, allowing it to be hidden beneath most underwear or swimwear. Scars generally fade over 12–18 months.

Stretch marks on the lower abdomen may be removed or improved if they fall within the skin that is excised.

Yes — but only when strict MBS 30177 criteria are met. Your consultation with Dr Boccola will determine your eligibility.

Patients typically achieve a flatter, firmer abdomen and a more defined waistline. Final results are visible around 3–6 months post-surgery once swelling subsides.
